How do I know when a problem needs dynamic programming?

I can solve DP problems when I know they're DP, but in contests I don't recognise them. Any signals?

Both techniques use two pointers (left and right) on arrays or strings. What is the fundamental test to decide whether a problem is Sliding Window or Two Pointers?
